Build your pottery skills over five private, two-hour sessions at Hobbs Ceramics in Bicester, Oxfordshire. With individual tuition in my home studio and time to practise, learn at your own pace and work towards creating a small collection of finished ceramics.

What you'll learn

  • Week 1: Introduction to clay, tools, wedging and preparing clay, centring on the wheel, opening and beginning to pull the walls of a pot.
  • Week 2: Practise centring, opening and pulling walls to create simple cylinders and tumblers, building consistency and control.
  • Week 3: Explore bowls and other simple vessels, proportions and rims. Trim and refine bases where pieces have dried to the right stage.
  • Week 4: Explore surface decoration, which may include underglaze, simple patterns, texture and sgraffito, and prepare suitable work for its first firing.
  • Week 5: Learn about choosing and applying glazes, firing temperatures and finishes. Glaze suitable bisque-fired work or practise techniques and prepare pieces for glazing, depending on their stage.

What's included

Five individually taught sessions of two hours each. Clay, tools, glazing and firing are included, subject to the agreed number of finished pieces and the course terms.

Your finished pottery

Each piece needs to dry fully before bisque and glaze firings, so finished pieces may not be ready to collect at the end of your final lesson. The number of finished pieces depends on your progress and the work that survives drying and firing. Collection arrangements and expected timescales will be explained during your sessions.
